Spooky AI Spirits Are Here. Aye or Nay?

by Team IA, November 14, 2021

Believers roam from one haunted location to another in search of the gone, namely spirits or ghosts but deep learning is making them a reality. An AI system called AI Spirits, engineered by MIT students Ziv Epstein and Matt Groh is capable of adding ghostly figures to your photos. All you have to do is upload pictures of vistas (deserted sites, churches, beaches, in a deep pine forest, and almost anywhere you want) and humanoid shadows will be added to the pictures and make them as eerie as it can get. The website uses object removal algorithms to achieve this by training a generative deep neural network on thousands of images provided by people from near and far. They then conjure phantasms into beings, commemorating the missing using algorithmic omission.

The human brain sees these phantomly figures just where it thinks they would be found – AI helps visualize people who are dead but connected to us emotionally. The project titled Deep Angel works by deleting people from the uploaded pictures, and adding generative painting and creates figures or apparitions to make the ghosts look real.

The simple front-end of AI spirits works like this: On one hand the user can select what or who they want to remove from their photos, and on the other hand, they can select the source. In the long run, of course, it can also be used to delete someone from your social media history forever – an ex, perhaps. But these are just wishes as of now as the tool needs more advancement to be able to perform such tasks.

The spooks AI is capable of just don’t end here. MIT media lab’s Shelley, named after Frankenstein author Mary Shelley, is an AI bot that can write the initial lines of truly scary horror stories and asks humans to collaborate with it and complete them. Shelley takes inspiration from 1,40,000 pieces of horror fiction it was fed with. The aim behind the creation of Shelley was to make machines evoke emotions in human beings and it has been quite successful in doing so. Till now the thought of the capabilities of AI has left many with that weird churning stomach, but Shelley goes all out and spooks them by its words! AI powered horror truly has wings as Nightmare Machine, yet another project by MIT, presents Haunted Faces and Haunted Places or computer generated scary imagery powered by deep learning algorithms and evil spirits. Boo!
